Patient education is when a healthcare professional equips their patient with the knowledge they need to understand and manage their health condition. It builds trust between the patient and the doctor, and it empowers the patient to participate in their own healthcare journey.

Patient education is traditionally part of the in-office experience. After doing an examination and running some tests, the physician makes a diagnosis. They then explain this diagnosis to the patient and go over the treatment options. However, patient education can extend beyond appointments to include blog posts on the practice’s website, physical brochures in the waiting room, and any other information given to patients.

Keep reading to learn more about patient education in healthcare. We explore the benefits of patient education and provide some potential ways to incorporate it into running your medical practice beyond appointments.

Benefits of Patient Education

Patient education is beneficial for both patients and doctors. Clear, accessible health information boosts patient engagement, satisfaction, and retention. For healthcare providers, it increases how efficiently their practice runs, allowing them to help more patients.

Increased Treatment Compliance

Health literacy is the degree to which a patient has the ability to obtain, understand, and use health information to make informed decisions about their well-being. It is your job as a physician to ensure your patients have strong health literacy by educating them on their medical conditions and treatment options. When a patient is well-informed, they understand the severity of their condition and the importance of treating it, so they’re more likely to stick to the treatment plan you propose for them.

Better Health Outcomes

When a patient follows their treatment plan, they are more likely to see a desirable health outcome. They can avoid medical complications that arise from leaving their condition untreated. They may also be able to prevent their condition from getting so serious that they have to go to the hospital or return to your office for additional appointments.

Higher Patient Satisfaction

A patient who feels like they received effective treatment is more likely to return to you for future medical concerns. They are also more likely to recommend your practice to others—either by talking to their family and friends or by leaving you online reviews.

Improved Alignment With Value-Based Reimbursement

Reimbursement is how your practice collects payment from Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers for the treatment you provide to your patients. Traditionally, the healthcare industry has used fee-for-service reimbursement, which means you receive payment for every appointment, treatment, procedure, and test.

However, the industry has recently started adopting value-based reimbursement. This type of reimbursement focuses on the quality of the medical care you provide as opposed to the quantity of services, so your reimbursement rate is higher if your patients report positive health outcomes. Since patient education leads to better outcomes, you’re incentivized to incorporate it into how you treat your patients’ health conditions.

Optimized Resource Allocation

A patient who understands their treatment plan and follows it usually requires less from you in the long run. They don’t need as many follow-up appointments, and they likely won’t call your office or message you through the patient portal to ask clarifying questions. This allows you to optimize your time, staff, exam rooms, and other practice resources to treat more patients.

Limitations of Patient Education

Patient education is not a replacement for treatment. Just because a patient understands the basics of their medical condition doesn’t mean they should try to treat it on their own. It’s still important for them to schedule an appointment with a physician who has proper medical training. Below are some additional limitations of patient education.

Limited Appointment Time

If you have back-to-back appointments or are already behind schedule, you may not have the time to dedicate to educating a patient on their medical condition. This is a potential use case for building out a patient education library on your website with informational content related to your area of practice so that you have something to direct them to. More on digital resources in a later section.

Communication Barriers

A patient’s culture, beliefs, education, native language, and other characteristics can affect how they receive and interpret information. Therefore, how you communicate their medical condition and treatment plan with them may be different from how you would talk to another patient. Generally speaking, though, you want to avoid medical jargon and speak in plain language.

Types of Patient Health Education Content

Aside from appointments, there are a few other times you can incorporate education into your patient experience. Many of these touchpoints happen digitally, such as through website pages or social media posts, but you can also create printed materials to distribute.

Printed Materials

Have brochures printed for your reception area and exam rooms. Use these pamphlets to explain common health conditions in your area of practice. Patients can take these brochures if they’re interested, or you can hand them one on their way out to give them more information about the condition you’re treating.

Website Resources

You can add a resource section on your practice’s website to create content related to your area of practice. Maybe this section has blog posts, ebooks, or even videos to educate website visitors on common medical conditions you see with your patients. This is not only useful for your patients, but it also establishes you as a credible, trustworthy healthcare professional, which is an important metric for getting your website to rank on Google search results.

Social Media Posts

Social media is another place to publish any educational videos you may have. You can also use these platforms to post tips on self-care or preventative care—maybe tied to the time of year to stay relevant. For example, a primary care physician might create a post about washing your hands and other ways to prevent getting sick during flu season. These posts should be short to make sure you don’t lose your followers’ attention. Any long-form content can go on your blog.

Email/Text/Portal Messages

Emails and texts are common for reminders about upcoming appointments and medication refills, but you can also use them after appointments to summarize the visit and the treatment plan you discussed with them. If a patient has any follow-up questions, they can send you a message through your patient portal.

Tips for Effective Patient Education

To ensure your patient education efforts are as effective as possible, we have compiled some best practices to help you implement it at various touchpoints with your patients.

Use the Teach-Back Method

The teach-back method is a tool you can use at the end of an appointment to ensure your patient understands the information you have given them. After explaining the diagnosis and treatment plan, ask the patient to repeat back what you said in their own words. This allows you to clarify any misconceptions immediately.

Encourage Questions

Another way to ensure that your patient leaves the appointment understanding their treatment plan is to encourage questions. Make sure your patients know it’s a two-way conversation so that they feel comfortable asking you clarifying questions. After you finish explaining the treatment, ask “What questions do you have?”. Framing it this way instead of “Do you have any questions?” implies that having questions is normal and welcomed.

Customize Educational Materials

Conduct research into the demographics of your patient population, and tailor your educational materials to meet their needs and preferences. For example, if your office is near a college campus, your patients are probably younger. Since they grew up with technology, they might be more comfortable with digital patient education resources, so you can invest less in print assets.

Use Visual Aids

Patients may get overwhelmed if a lot of information is thrown at them at once. Add visual aids, such as infographics, to your blog posts, social posts, pamphlets, and other patient education materials to break up the text and get your point across.

Incorporate Patient Feedback

You can add a form to your emails, texts, and website to request feedback from your patients. The feedback you receive will likely be related to every aspect of your patient experience, but you can extract any insights you get about education specifically and act on them. For example, maybe several patients mentioned their appointments feeling rushed. In which case, you can implement a new policy to extend appointment time slots by five or 10 minutes to ensure you can answer all patient questions.

Update Assets Regularly

Best practices in the medical care industry are constantly evolving, and you want to make sure your patient education efforts are taking this into account. It’s an easy fix to change the language you’re using during in-person interactions, but you also want to update digital and print resources.

Implement Digital Tools

If you plan to create patient education content that lives online, you’re going to need some digital tools to manage it. For instance, you might need a website builder and host for blog content, accounts for social media platforms, and electronic health records (EHR) or electronic medical records (EMR) software for texts, emails, and portal messages.

Train Staff

Patient education is a big undertaking to do on your own. That’s why we recommend training your staff to help you with it. You can handle patient education during appointments and teach your staff members how to create website and social media content. Or, maybe you feel more comfortable writing the content yourself to ensure that it’s accurate. You can still have your staff manage your digital tools to get that content published.

Final Thoughts

Patient education helps patients feel supported, informed, and empowered. It also improves patient outcomes and optimizes practice operations. Officite is available if you are interested in implementing patient education but need help getting started. We have a patient education service to help you create website content and other digital resources.

Who hasn’t heard of OpenAI and ChatGPT? The ongoing international dialogue about artificial intelligence has become a fever pitch for months. The number of commentators has increased, and people now consider AI more than science fiction.

In addition, there’s talk of artificial intelligence replacing human workers. Still, on the other side of the debate, some believe that artificial intelligence will only complement humans and not replace them.

Whatever the case may be in ten or twenty years after the birth of ChatGPT (the AI chatbot), we can’t deny that machine learning and artificial intelligence can significantly help digital marketing for the medical industry. Digital healthcare marketing is complex and tedious, and utilizing the right technology often solves many difficulties in making SEO campaigns efficient.

Can AI Replace Human Content Writing in Search Engine Optimization?

The short answer is no, it can’t. But hear us out: AI has its uses, but writing blogs and pages in their entirety for SEO is not one of them. Content is the heart of inbound marketing efforts, and while generative AI can create thousands of words with the press of a button, people must realize a couple of things:

1. AI takes information from the internet and uses basic information to generate human-readable text.

2. Humans train artificial intelligence, still. They don’t learn on their own without absolutely no input from people.

3. Inaccurate information, partially correct information, and other types of otherwise flawed information can make it to the final text of a website if a website owner chooses to use only generative AI to create the copy.

4. AI can even pick up prejudices from existing information on the internet.

While using artificial intelligence is tempting because the AI chatbot services of today are so cheap, no independent medical practitioner should be willing to risk the integrity of their website to save a few bucks. Additionally, content writing for search engine optimization is part of a larger inbound marketing strategy that uses other moving parts that artificial intelligence cannot access. For example, AI writing tools have no access to or do not understand the following:

1. A medical practitioner’s academic and professional history, ethics, values, professional goals, experience, etc.

2. The history of independent medical practice and changes and improvements over the years.

3. The nuances of medical practice and the complexity of patient-doctor dynamics

4. The specificities of the medical practice’s branding and any changes that occur as the medical practice overcomes challenges yearly.

5. The nuances of medical information as it relates to medical services and patients.

6. The appropriate language to be used when addressing patients and their families online.

7. Complex adjustments are needed to facilitate communication and connection between patients and doctors.

8. The balancing act between necessary steps in healthcare marketing in content and how the model of medical care can fit into this framework.

Many more factors affect the effectiveness of artificial intelligence as a generative tool for digital healthcare marketing. Still, one thing is for sure: an independent medical practitioner would be stepping in the wrong direction if they choose to use generative AI and not the services of a professional content provider for their content needs. Furthermore, while AI can get brighter in the years to come, we are nowhere near where AI replaces human intelligence completely.

The Year of AI is Also the Year of Maximizing Your Healthcare Marketing ROI

How Does AI Contribute to Easing the Work in Healthcare Marketing and SEO?

We don’t deny that SEO and healthcare marketing takes a lot of work, and the hours and stress are associated with getting things done. However, since a medical practice’s marketing budget is on the line, we’d like to emphasize that AI can help ease some burdens. Below are some fantastic ways artificial intelligence can help you achieve your inbound marketing/SEO efforts.

Refined Targeting in Healthcare Marketing

Healthcare marketing (including SEO) is typically an independent medical practice’s most significant expense and one that may be made more efficient with artificial intelligence.

Businesses used to spend exorbitant amounts of money on traditional media advertising like television, radio, and newspapers, with the full understanding that only a small fraction of those who saw their ads would really buy from them. This was highly inefficient, yet corporations needed to compete for market dominance.

With AI, we now know a lot more about who is and isn’t interested in what we offer, thanks to the internet and measurable user data. Take e-commerce giant Amazon, which offers robust recommendation technology, and search giant Google, which has an equally massive data landscape for targeted advertising. AI/ML has been integrated into these platforms, allowing them to improve over time as they are exposed to more information about clients and their purchasing behaviors.

A Radar for Micro-Influencers

AI algorithms are already being used to ensure that online personalities most likely to appeal to users appear most in their newsfeeds. Influencer marketing is another major trend in marketing right now.

Marketers will increasingly employ AI to find micro-influencers whose audiences and styles align with their own. As a result, “micro-influencers” have emerged; these are regular people, as opposed to A-list celebrities, who have gained a dedicated following by catering to a specific subset of their target audience with authoritative insights. With the help of AI, medical practices can search across a wide variety of subsets of their target audience to identify the most relevant micro-influencers.

Customer Relationship Management

Understanding how to manage relationships with current patients is crucial for any medical practice, as these patients account for revenue. AI can prevent patient “churn” by spotting patterns of behavior that usually indicate a patient is about to leave for another healthcare provider.

Automatically directing promotions and incentives to these patients is one strategy for winning back their loyalty. As a result, chatbot technology, driven by natural language processing, is becoming increasingly popular among AI-enhanced marketers.

This can help sort incoming consumer inquiries so that those who need an immediate answer get it, reducing the likelihood of disappointment. In addition, with the help of AI-powered CRM, organizations can make more precise projections across all the markets in which they participate. It can also be used for data quality management in the CRM by spotting duplicate or inaccurate patient records.

AI Enhances Content Marketing and SEO

AI-enhanced content marketing and SEO has become the standard in many sectors thanks to the popularity of social media marketing and the ever-increasing need for online material.

Here, AI comes in handy by pointing us toward the most effective channels for disseminating the material we create to our audience. There are now a variety of AI-enabled solutions that can perform this task automatically.

Some AI content tools can help medical practitioners improve their social media shares and email opening rates by providing headline-generating tools and allowing users to track their progress and adjust their written output accordingly.

You can also use AI in other parts of the content creation process, including visual generation. So yes, some AI tools can help generate unique and engaging visuals for blog posts and pages.

Content personalization is also more accessible with the help of AI, and human-written content can be enhanced with keywords derived from the data harvest of AI services.

Artificial intelligence can help writers and editors integrate vital reference points into overarching marketing messages. One example of this integration process is when an editor or content planner uses AI to generate headlines and outlines for SEO content. The data from popular content across the web can help shorten the content brainstorming process. As we don’t have to reinvent the wheel, we can use the existing top-ranking references to create relevant content for any medical website.

The customers’ whereabouts in the buying cycle can be more accurately determined with the help of AI. You can target them with information that sets your product apart from the competition if it learns that they are “shopping around.” If it determines that a customer is actively shopping, it can send them promotions urging them to “act now” to take advantage of a special offer before it expires.

Key Takeaways

Incorporating AI/ML into eCommerce and search platforms means these tools can learn from users’ preferences over time. This can facilitate monetary savings and a rise in revenue. In addition, marketers are using AI algorithms to find micro-influencers whose followers and approaches are compatible with their own. AI pulls data from the web and converts it into human-readable prose, but it can’t replace human writers yet.

Officite provides healthcare marketing solutions for solo doctors to increase their revenue.

AI can lighten a load of healthcare marketing by assisting independent medical practices in honing their targeting and enhancing their inbound marketing/SEO initiatives.

Artificially intelligent writing tools cannot access a doctor’s or healthcare provider’s academic and professional background, ethics, values, professional goals, experience, branding, nuances of medical practice, medical information, appropriate language, adjustments needed to facilitate communication and connection between patients and doctors, or balancing act between necessary steps in healthcare marketing.

Marketing in the healthcare industry has matured into a nuanced method of connecting with patients at every point along the care continuum. Patients are more eager to take charge of their treatment and learn more about your practice.

That’s why it’s crucial to build a solid plan for healthcare marketing that can reach and inform both potential and current patients. Healthcare marketing includes advertising medical services, increasing brand recognition, and fostering meaningful relationships with patients and the broader circle of professionals, providers, organizations, and communities.

Any medical practice can use multiple strategies and channels to market medical products, treatments, and healthcare services.

Patients needing medical attention, referring doctors, and other vital players in the healthcare system are all potential targets for effective healthcare marketing campaigns.

Medical practitioners can enhance new patient acquisition, patient loyalty, and brand recognition with the help of healthcare marketing platforms like Officite, data analytics, and market research, on top of other conventional marketing strategies.

Many successful healthcare marketing initiatives aim to educate patients, foster more robust bonds with them, and better meet their healthcare requirements and concerns.

Creating and implementing a pediatric marketing strategy can involve numerous moving parts, including social media marketing, search engine optimization, patient advertising, and content marketing.

Contacting patient families at every stage of their healthcare journey is crucial. The most successful healthcare marketing campaigns are patient-centric, meaning they center on the individual patient and their identity, knowledge, and trust needs.

The constant evolution of healthcare means that educating and informing patients and their families has become even more critical in healthcare marketing. Promoting your pediatric practice and medical services in a crowded market can be challenging, especially as local competition increases and large hospital systems enter the fray.

When investing in pediatric marketing, you can distinguish your medical practice from any rivals already in SERPs on social media in your local market. One further incentive to prioritize healthcare marketing is its opportunity to connect with potential patients and establish credibility as an authority in your field.

Supercharge Your Pediatric Practice with Digital Healthcare Marketing

Are you ready to take your pediatric practice to new heights? Start maximizing healthcare marketing channels, including medical web design, SEO, Facebook and Google Ads, and more.

– Enhance your online presence.

– Increase brand awareness.

How Do You Make Major Strides in Your Pediatric Marketing Plan?

Maintain A Unified Healthcare Branding

You may believe your medical knowledge and skills already set you apart from other medical practitioners. Doctors look the same to average healthcare customers, and it’s common knowledge that people are hesitant when they feel they don’t know a pediatrician.

Cost-per-acquisition can be lowered, and return-on-investment (ROI) can be increased through brand building and promotion.

It would help if you started by defining your brand’s purpose. In other words, why should someone choose your pediatric practice over another nearby or in the same city? Is it the manner that you deal with patients? Your kid- and pet-friendly workplace? Your luxurious spa?

Patients will remember your healthcare company because of the one thing that sets your medical staff apart from the competition. Because you’re asking customers to entrust you with their health, you must highlight any awards or recognition you’ve received for this kind of work.

Finding out what approaches work best for your medical practice’s brand may take some time. A pediatric marketing plan with consistent marketing materials and branding efforts can help yield positive results.

Assess Online Patient Experience

One website alone was enough to appeal to new patients about two decades ago. However, as the healthcare sector moves more readily toward virtual care experiences like remote monitoring and telehealth, patient participation has gotten more nuanced in recent years.

A website serves as the virtual front door of your pediatric practice. Your pediatric website gives new patients the much-needed positive first impression that they need to trust your practice and, subsequently, the message that you wish to deliver throughout your website.

The imagery and phrasing on your site should reflect your target audience and make contact information accessible and correct.

Medical practices can improve patient involvement by providing value-added services such as quick and simple information retrieval, punctual appointment scheduling, and clear lines of communication with doctors. It must be inherent in every interaction with your brand, whether planned or unplanned.

The website’s user experience is crucial. However, designers sometimes get caught up in creating an aesthetically pleasing website at the expense of the user experience. It’s common for us to discover that a website needs a total redesign. However, we also search for methods to make quick, visible adjustments to attract more customers, such as moving the “Contact Us” form to a more prominent location.

To improve your patients’ experiences, you should also examine the channels via which your target demographic frequently interacts with your business (such as your website, social media, paid marketing, third-party listing service, etc.).

Customers prefer to do business with you when it is convenient for them. There should not be any gaps in your medical marketing approach.

Find out if customers phone or fill out a form following their initial contact with your company. Creating a customer journey map can help you identify pain points and conversion drivers.

Use Social Media to Promote Your Pediatric Practice

Regarding digital healthcare marketing, far too many hospitals and clinics rely only on organic social media. Directly uploading photographs, status updates, events, etc., to platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube is called “organic social media.” It’s an excellent way to spread awareness of your business and update your clientele in the healthcare industry.

But it shouldn’t be your primary method of interacting with others. Even if you don’t already know a lot of individuals who could be interested in what you have to offer, paid social media advertising can help you reach a considerable number of them. Unless they are currently involved with or employed by a local healthcare institution, very few people will share online content produced by that organization.

There’s more to paid social media than just clicking the “Boost Post” button when posting from a company page. It requires planning and resources similar to pay-per-click or display advertising to reach the desired demographic.

Solicit Feedback

Customers plan their visits based on the positive experiences of people who are similar to themselves. The reliability of online reviews keeps growing among both prospective and current patients. Regarding finding a new doctor, 86% of the 1,124 customers in the United States polled consider online reviews as trustworthy as personal recommendations.

Patients rarely offer feedback unless they feel compelled to (e.g., after having an exceptional or terrible experience). You’re passing up chances to highlight satisfied customers’ feedback unless you actively seek out reviews from them.

How Do You Craft a Comprehensive Digital Healthcare Marketing Strategy to Reach More Patients?

Now that we better understand why pediatric marketing is so crucial, we can examine the most valuable strategies for expanding a practice’s patient base. As a result, we’ve put out these healthcare marketing tactics and case studies to help you make sense of the marketing maze.

Build an Appealing, Engaging, and Informative Medical Website

Engaging patients and earning their trust in the digital age requires a well-designed medical website. Create an easy-to-navigate interface first so that users may quickly locate the content they require. Give priority to providing informative information that answers frequently asked questions and resolves patient concerns.

Encourage patient participation and improve communication by including interactive features like appointment booking, contact forms, and live chat. Your website must be mobile-friendly and search engine optimized to attract a larger audience.

Use patient endorsements, success stories, and eye-catching visuals to build trust and rapport with your audience. Finally, keep your website dynamic and patient-centric by adding new content regularly and responding to patient comments.

Propel and Grow Your Pediatric Practice Using Data-Driven Digital Strategies

Establish a Medical SEO Strategy

Focusing on medical SEO is an effective strategy to attract people searching for specific treatments and diseases, making healthcare marketing tactics critical to the success of medical practices.

Creating content-rich websites that focus on specific treatments, diseases, and surgeries is essential if you want to get the most out of your orthopedic marketing efforts. To rank higher in local Google searches and attract new patient leads, boosting SEO with a comprehensive content library dedicated to each topic is crucial.

Digging deeper and building separate sub-pages for specific treatments and conditions is essential rather than centering on broader categories.

Start on Medical Reputation Management

The rise of Google Business Profiles has made reputation management an increasingly important aspect of healthcare marketing. The accuracy and relevancy of GBPs are greatly aided by patient input, especially considering Google’s emphasis on user-generated content and local medical SEO.

As a result of the COVID-19 epidemic and the general consumerization of healthcare, patients now rely heavily on online evaluations and ratings when deciding which healthcare professionals to see. Patients value accessibility and service quality higher than membership in any one network.

Therefore, medical practices must adjust their marketing tactics to actively solicit fresh feedback on GBPs for their facilities and providers. The collection of feedback is greatly simplified when this procedure is automated. Google’s algorithm also reads through reviews and pulls out pertinent terms that can affect where they appear in search results. This shift highlights the need for a substantial review management program to improve search engine rankings and brand awareness.

Programmatic Display Ads

For healthcare marketing, programmatic display ads are the wave of the future.

Because of its pinpoint targeting and increased engagement options, programmatic display advertising has wholly transformed how healthcare firms communicate with their intended audience.

This effective healthcare advertising strategy uses real-time bidding and automation to distribute tailored ads across digital channels, including desktop and mobile devices.

Programmatic display ads have revolutionized healthcare marketing in the following ways:

Healthcare marketers can use programmatic display’s refined targeting possibilities to zero in on specific patients based on demographics, interests, and behavior.

Programmatic display ads make dynamic ad personalization possible, where ads can be modified in real-time or depending on information about a specific user. Patients can have more relevant and exciting ad experiences thanks to this level of customization.

Campaigns can be optimized in real-time using programmatic display advertising.

Healthcare advertisers benefit from programmatic display’s expanded reach and scalability because of the platform’s integration with a vast ecosystem of websites, mobile apps, and digital platforms.

You may find significant savings by comparing programmatic display advertising to more conventional forms of media buying. Marketers can maximize resources and spend wisely thanks to automated campaign management and real-time bidding.

Start a Google Ads Campaign

Google Ads is the best medical marketing strategy I’ve seen thus far. Inherent search intent and high-quality leads generated by the platform provide extraordinary value. Let’s take a look at why Google Ads is so vital to the success of any healthcare ad campaign.

Google Ads stand out from the crowd because of the patient search intent. Search ads on Google, in contrast to other forms of healthcare marketing, come with an inherent “appointment” aim. Patients who conduct Internet searches for certain medical facilities or physicians are likely inquiring about scheduling an appointment. This means these leads are more qualified and can be converted with fewer touchpoints.

The distinction between “push” and “pull” marketing might help illuminate the idea of search intent. Push marketing, like social media advertising, exposes your medical practice to potential patients even if they don’t need your services immediately.

Searches for more precise terms indicate that the online user is actively seeking a solution and is more likely to schedule an appointment. By connecting with patients who are eager to act, healthcare marketers can better meet their needs.

Email Marketing

Email marketing is effective and remains widely used in the healthcare industry. Email is a crucial channel of connection with patients, whether for new-patient funnels, remarketing to existing patients, or conveying essential information during times like COVID.

Pediatric practices can expect a constant flow of returning (and new) patients if you put time and effort into building a robust email marketing program.

Here are some terrific places to start for expanding your email list:

– Webinars

– PDFs and e-books

– Paid funnels (like assessments and quizzes)

– Subscriber-only content

Backlinks

Building backlinks is essential in healthcare marketing because it helps with SEO and other internet metrics. Backlinks are references to your medical website from other websites. Backlinks are incoming links from one website to another. Search engines, such as Google, consider backlinks as a signal of a website’s credibility and authority. When reputable and relevant websites link to a pediatric website, search engines perceive it as a vote of confidence, which can positively impact the website’s search engine rankings. Higher rankings mean increased visibility and organic traffic, making it easier for parents and caregivers to find valuable pediatric information.

Medical backlinks can drive direct referral traffic to pediatric websites. When a relevant website links to a pediatric site and users click on that link, they are directed to the pediatric website, potentially increasing its visitor count. Backlinks from trusted sources, mainly those catering to parents, healthcare professionals, or educational institutions, can attract highly relevant traffic, increasing engagement and conversions.

Backlinks from authoritative sources in the medical or pediatric field can help establish a pediatric website as a reliable source of information. When reputable organizations, medical journals, or renowned experts in the pediatric field link to a website, it enhances its credibility and positions it as an authoritative resource. This can foster trust among users and encourage them to return to the website for reliable and trustworthy information.

Search engine crawlers discover new content primarily through links. When a pediatric website receives backlinks from various sources, it increases the chances of search engines discovering and indexing its pages. This is particularly important for newer pediatric websites or those with limited visibility. Backlinks can expedite crawling and indexing, ensuring valuable content reaches the SERPs more quickly.

Medical backlinks can facilitate networking opportunities and collaborations within the pediatric community. By reaching out to other pediatric websites or organizations and offering valuable content, you increase the likelihood of them linking to your website. This can lead to mutually beneficial relationships, guest posting opportunities, and a broader reach within the pediatric field.

Key Takeaways

Healthcare marketing is crucial to connecting with patients at every stage of their care journey. It involves advertising medical services, increasing brand recognition, and fostering meaningful relationships with patients and professionals.

A pediatric marketing strategy can involve various moving parts, including social media marketing, search engine optimization, patient advertising, and content marketing. The most successful healthcare marketing initiatives aim to educate patients, foster more robust bonds with them, and better meet their healthcare requirements and concerns.

Investing in pediatric marketing can help distinguish your practice from competitors in a crowded market as local competition increases and large hospital systems enter the fray. Investing in pediatric marketing can distinguish your practice from competitors and establish credibility as an authority in your field.

New Patients Are Looking For You Online

TV, radio, and newspaper ads were once enough to get new patients flowing through your healthcare practice’s door. However, some of these traditional marketing strategies are no longer the most affordable, efficient, or effective. As the healthcare industry continues to evolve, so do patient expectations regarding finding, trusting, and maintaining relationships with healthcare providers.

We know word-of-mouth will always be one of the best ways to gain new patients, and this is still true in today’s day and age, simply think of online listings and reviews as digital word-of-mouth referrals. Listings with consistent, accurate practice information enhance your discoverability and credibility while strengthening patients’ trust in you.

Top Online Platforms To Find A Healthcare Provider:

Online Physician Directories

Review Sites

Search Engines

Google Maps

Mobile Applications

Individual Practice Websites

1. Help Patients Find You

More often than not, patients will discover your practice on the internet. Nearly half of all patients ultimately select their provider based on information they find online. Why is that?

Most patients will find you through an online directory. You’ve likely used them to find local businesses near you on apps like Yelp or mapping applications like Google Maps. But did you know some directories cater to specific healthcare specialties?

Directories like WebMD Doctor Directory and ZocDoc are ideal for healthcare providers and are a great way to capture high-intent patients. Actively searching for providers online means patients are likely ready to book an appointment as soon as possible. To streamline scheduling for these patients, consider solutions featured in the appointment hotlist. Online directories make your practice more visible and put you at the top of search results, so those eager prospects can find you before they find your competitors.

2. Don’t Let Inaccurate Information Turn Patients Away

Your practice may appear on maps, apps, and other online directories (even if you didn’t create these listings yourself). Making sure each listing contains accurate data is incredibly important to a patient’s decision to choose you, so it’s vital to weed out listings with incorrect information.

Directory publishers combine web crawlers, user-submitted data, and business-submitted data with complex algorithms to determine what content to display online. However, these solutions can sometimes get the data wrong.

Consider the statistics:

68% of listings had a name-related error

48% of practices’ listings contained basic address errors that misdirected patients

29% of healthcare practices lacked accurate phone numbers

Avoid giving patients a negative experience before they even walk through your doors. In today’s age of instant gratification, patients need to be able to access your practice’s information easily. If patients find outdated or incorrect information, they’ll likely become confused and frustrated, which will lead them to choose someone else.

3. Improve Your Ranking With Quality Listings

Search engines, like Google, use algorithms to determine the consistency of your practice’s information across the internet. Consistent data can help improve your ranking in search engine result pages (SERPs).

As technology advances, so does the way patients find a provider:

90% of U.S. smartphone users rely on their devices for location-based services, such as directions, reviews, or recommendations.

Nearly 75% of people who own a voice-activated speaker, like Amazon Alexa, say the devices are part of their daily routine.4 Ensuring the accuracy of your practice’s information is especially crucial regarding these technologies since the speaker does not display information on a screen.

Quality listings with consistent, accurate information help your practice rank higher and appear more credible. On the other hand, those that have not maintained their online listings fall to the bottom of search results. Since less than 1% of people click past the first page of Google, low search rankings hurt your visibility, credibility, and, ultimately, your profitability.

4. The Dangers Of Duplicate Listings

Search engines rank practices with duplicate listings lower than those with one distinct listing per online directory. Why? Because multiple listings may signal that the practice listing is inaccurate, and therefore the practice seems less credible.

When web crawlers come across several versions of contact or location information, they cannot read the data as if it belongs to several unique practices and creates duplicate listings in response.

Duplicate listings can confuse your patients, and even positive reviews become scattered throughout those duplicate listings, further confusing web crawlers and potentially diminishing your online ranking. So, how can you prevent duplicate listings and disjointed reviews? Regularly verify and monitor your practice information and confirm it is consistent and correct across all online directories.

5. Boost Practice Credibility And Patient Confidence With Reviews

Online reviews are used for more than just choosing where to get a cup of coffee. 93% of consumers read reviews before making purchasing decisions, and healthcare is no exception. Online reviews have become an integral part of the patient journey.

Healthcare ranks as one of the top industries where reviews have the greatest influence on credibility. According to Forbes, 81% of patients rely on reviews to select a provider, and this reliance has nearly doubled since pre-pandemic days. It’s simple. Favorable reviews give prospective patients peace of mind and confidence in choosing your practice, while negative ones do the opposite.

Monitoring your online reputation can be time-consuming, but outsourcing your reputation management services to a third party, like Officite, may be the ideal solution for your practice.

Conclusion

As the digital world grows, so does the importance of maintaining your listings and reviews on Yelp, Google Maps, and wherever else you appear online. Your success, visibility, and patient base depend on the strength of your online presence and search ranking, built from credible, consistent practice information.

The first step to enhancing your digital reputation and patient reach is simple. There’s no need to get overwhelmed in figuring out where to start or who to hire. Use one affordable service for online reputation maintenance, SEO advantages, appointment scheduling, patient acquisition success management, and more.

If your online marketing efforts haven’t been meeting your practice’s goals or if you have yet to build an online presence for your practice and want to be able to reach new clients in 2020, then here are the most important parts of an online presence that your practice must implement to stand out in the new year.

Professional Website Design and Services

As the web has evolved, so have clients’ expectations. They now expect a professional design that functions seamlessly on any device. Visitors will usually form an opinion of a business based on their website within 15 seconds of visiting it. After that, they will decide to stay or go elsewhere.

Web design is complex, but there are a few principles you can implement right away. The first place to start is to make sure that your website is easy to read, easy to navigate, and easy to engage with.

Easy to Read Fonts

The fonts you select for your website should be simple and easy to read. Fonts like Arial and Verdana are available on almost any computer by default and commonly recommended for readability on screens.

Color and Design

Choose colors that are easy on the eyes. Save bright colors for your call to action buttons (e.g. “Schedule Appointment”). Don’t worry about blank or white space; it makes the website easier to read and navigate.

Images That Impact

Include images of your practice, doctors, and office staff. Imagery can often grab a visitor’s attention more effectively than text alone.

Clear Call to Action

If visitors can’t tell what the next step is, they’ll quickly leave your website. Prompt them to fill out a contact form, schedule an appointment, or read helpful content.

Mobile Responsive

Over half of all web traffic takes place over mobile devices, like a smartphone or tablet. A website that’s not built for these devices will be difficult or impossible to use.

Mobile responsive design is a website that is built to adjust itself to any screen size and any device. This gives you a single version of your website that loads quickly, is easy to maintain, and stands out in Google Search results.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Even if you have the best website out there, Google still needs to be able to find it. So how do you show up on Google and move towards the top of search results? There are hundreds of factors that get you there, but these are the most important ones:

Quality Content

Content must be relevant to the lives of visitors or else they will realize that what they are looking for can’t be found on your website and will go elsewhere. As you get to know your clients more, fine-tune your content to better suit their needs.

Repeat Traffic

Visitors are likely to come back to your website regularly and share your content with others if it contains valuable, relevant content. This is especially true when your website includes patient education. Google also considers repeat traffic to be a good sign that your website is helping its visitors and is more likely to reward this kind of website in search rankings.

On-Page SEO

The words that you type into the Google search bar are called keywords. On-page SEO optimizes the content of your website to more closely match the keywords that people use to search for a provider or more information about your services, making it more likely for them to find your website first.

Dwell Time

This is the average amount of time that visitors spend on your website. When they spend more time on your website, Google assumes that they are engaged with your website and found it to be more valuable.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Search Marketing

The above are examples of organic search engine optimization. Organic SEO generally takes four to six months to fully gain traction in search results.

Pay-per-click ads are advertisements that you only pay for when a visitor clicks on them. These ads often lead directly to your website or a landing page. Because they can appear at the top of search results the same day you create them, PPC ads can drive traffic to your website right away.

By using a combination of SEO and PPC ads, you can significantly increase traffic to your practice’s website in a reduced timeframe and get better results for your practice.

Call Tracking

Being able to record incoming calls and track where prospective clients initially find your contact information can give you valuable information about your marketing efforts. Examples include tracking how many phone calls convert into new clients or your monthly call volume over time.

Call tracking can also be used to gain insight into the performance of your staff and discover areas of improvement where you can help them become even more effective.

Patient Education

Tech-savvy practices understand a clients’ desire to use the internet as a source of healthcare information and meet that desire by including authoritative patient education on their website. This turns your website into a go-to resource for reliable healthcare information. But online patient education also:

Makes Your Website More Engaging

When a client finds information to their questions, they’re more likely to schedule an appointment with your practice. Clients may also share your educational content with family or friends. Once they decide it’s time to see make an appointment, your contact information will be close by.

Can Improve Google Search Rankings

Online patient education generates more content for your website, which generates traction in search engine results for your website. With a greater supply of curated content, search engines are more likely to direct patients who are searching for healthcare information to your practice’s website.

Better Health Outcomes

Easy access to patient education results in increased confidence in your recommended treatments, improved self-care, reduced anxiety, better health outcomes, adherence to treatment, and reduced hospitalizations

Online Reputation Management

Online reviews are the new word of mouth recommendations. 85% of consumers trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation. This makes your online reputation vital to the success of your practice.

Clients will always be able to leave reviews of your practice on existing review channels, but online reputation solutions make leaving reviews easier by giving clients the option of leaving reviews directly from your website or by allowing you to use automated tools that remind patients to leave a review.

Online reputation management solutions also often allow you to protect your practice against fraudulent or malicious reviews before they can cause damage to your reputation.

Business And Healthcare Listings

Your practice website is your online “home base,” but many patients will first come into contact with you outside of your website. Search engines, social media networks, mobile applications, and healthcare directories are where up to 58% of prospective new patients will find your practice.

Listings management services increase the effectiveness of these channels by allowing you to manage all of the information about your practice from one central source. By having a centralized source of information, you prevent inaccuracies and duplicate information from frustrating patients and causing penalties in search engine rankings.

Updating contact information and hours of operation across all your channels can often be completed in seconds.

Social Media Management

Social media networks like Facebook represent a vast referral network of clients for your practice. Establishing a social media presence for your practice allows you to reach new clients and stay connected with existing clients.

You can build a large network of potential referrals by sharing updates about your practice, distributing helpful content, notifying clients of holiday updates, and more.

Many prospective patients use their social media accounts to search for a local practice or ask their friends and family for a recommendation.

Secure Websites

Google has been making changes to help its users understand the need for a secure internet. They now label all websites that don’t use HTTPS (the protocol that secure websites run on) as “not secure” in the Chrome web browser. Other browsers are implementing similar features.

Google has sent a clear message that they expect website owners to have secure websites by default.

Websites that don’t have security enabled will likely experience a penalty in search engine rankings. Considering that an estimated 70% of page-one Google rankings are secure websites, any practice that is not using HTTPS should ask their web hosting provider to enable it or switch to a hosting provider that has HTTPS enabled by default.

Secure Forms and Emails

It’s necessary to keep all online communication safe and secure within HIPAA guidelines. Secure emails and HTTPS-secured website forms protect your patients’ private health information, keep your practice HIPAA compliant, and reduce the risk of a potential data breach.

Look for a communications platform that keeps all emails, documents, and forms protected, even if the recipient doesn’t have a secure email address.

Key Takeaways

Clients expect websites to use modern, clean designs that function seamlessly on all devices.

Over half of all internet traffic comes from mobile devices, so be sure your website is mobile-friendly.

Solving a problem is one of the main reasons people use the web. If your website helps them solve their problems, your practice can grow in authority and search ranking.

A successful practice’s website will offer information to help for new and existing patients. One of the most effective ways to accomplish this is to offer an extensive library of educational materials.

Online patient education can lead to better health outcomes, higher levels of engagement with your website, and improved search rankings.

Higher Website Engagement (SEO)

Higher levels of engagement with your website are one of the greatest strengths of online patient education.

When a patient visits your website about a certain condition or symptom and finds the answers they’re looking for, they’re more likely to move forward and schedule an appointment with your practice.

Search Rankings

Content that improves engagement is also an effective way to improve your search rankings. The level of engagement that patients have with your website is a search ranking factor.

Helpful content keeps people on your website longer, which signals to Google that your website is a useful resource for your visitors.

Mobile Engagement

About 77% of web users utilize their smartphones to search for healthcare information in real-time. Providing this information right when they need it is an effective way to connect patients with your practice through real-time patient communication.

Savvy practices know this and take advantage of it. Helpful content that can be accessed anywhere gives patients a reason to keep coming back to your website and recommend it to others.

Better Patient Outcomes

Referring to educational materials during an office visit or even referring patients to online materials as an out of office supplement can improve their health outcomes.

Having an additional source of information to refer to outside of the office can balance out the often short visits that doctors have available to each patient.

The health outcome benefits of patient education include:

5 Ways Online Patient Education Makes your Practice Better

Thanks to smartphones, 77% of American adults have the answer to almost any question in their pockets. Tech-savvy practices take advantage of this by putting patient education materials directly on their websites. But accessibility isn’t the only benefit. Online patient education has a few perks that you might not expect.

It can raise your Google ranking.

Putting your patient education materials online generates more content for your website, which in turn creates new opportunities for search optimization. With a greater supply of properly curated content, search engines are more likely to direct patients searching for podiatry health information to your practice website.

It caters to more learning styles.

Graduating from the world of paper education materials opens the door to a wide variety of content delivery methods. The best examples include high definition videos, illustrations, and anatomically correct diagrams. Patients can watch, look, or read according to their preference.

Space is virtually unlimited.

Online materials don’t take up physical space, which means you can provide as much information as you want. You probably can’t fit a display of 1,000 different pamphlets in your practice, but you can do exactly that online.

It’s easier to update than print.

New developments in your field require updates to your patient education materials. When they’re online, it’s often as easy as changing some text in your website editor. That means you can stay on the cutting edge of podiatry, giving your patients the up-to-date information they deserve. Printed materials need to be re-ordered, old ones recycled, etc.

It makes your website more engaging.

This is perhaps online education’s greatest strength. When a new patient visits your website and finds answers to their questions, they’re more likely to schedule an appointment with you than with another practice. It proves to them that you are knowledgeable on the subject. Once they decide they need to see a doctor, your contact information will be very close by. Plus, combining educational content with strong doctor reviews builds trust and credibility—two things every patient looks for before making a decision.

All in all, online patient education is one of the best ways to cater to the modern patient. Use it alongside printed materials in order to get the best results – both for your patients and your practice.
