They don’t teach SEO (search engine optimization) in medical school, but more and more, it’s a crucial skill for success as a physician with a medical practice. Like medicine, it’s a bit of a blend of art and science. A doctor’s online presence is as important as their “bedside manner.” There are technical skills to master and an intuition that develops as you implement. It’s an ongoing pursuit that has the potential to transform a surviving practice into a thriving one.

Investing in healthcare SEO is an investment in the health and longevity of your practice. In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is mandatory for any business, and medical services and practices are no exception. We live so much of our lives online and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a powerful tool that can help doctors attract more patients, enhance their online visibility, and grow their practice. This comprehensive guide will explore 11 effective SEO strategies specifically tailored for medical practices by our healthcare digital marketing agency.

1. Optimize Your Website for Local Searches

Local SEO is vital for medical practices as it helps you connect with patients in your vicinity. Ensure your website is optimized for local patients search by including your practice’s name, address, and phone number (NAP) consistently across all online platforms for local listings.

Additionally, creating and optimizing a Google My Business profile is essential for local search results. Encourage satisfied patients to leave reviews on your Google My Business page and other review sites, as positive reviews can significantly impact your local search rankings. For example, using local keywords in your content, such as “pediatrician in Chicago” or “dental clinic in San Francisco,” can improve your rankings for local searches and place you on Google maps. Furthermore, engaging with local directories and participating in community events can further enhance your local SEO efforts and search engine results.

TIP: Use tools like Moz Local to ensure your NAP information is consistent across all platforms. Inconsistent information can confuse search engines and lower your local search ranking. Participating in local health fairs or community events and sharing those experiences on your website and social media can also boost local engagement.

2. Create High-Quality, Relevant Content

Content is king in medical practice SEO. Regularly publishing high-quality, relevant content that addresses the needs and concerns of your patients is crucial. This can include blog posts, articles, videos, and infographics.

Focus on topics that are commonly searched by your target audience, such as treatment options, health tips, and patient testimonials. This will help you narrow in on keyword optimization for your target audience. For instance, writing detailed healthcare services articles on conditions you treat, like “Managing Chronic Back Pain: Treatment Options and Tips,” or creating video tutorials on common exercises to alleviate back pain or improve posture, can provide valuable information to your audience about healthcare services.

Using keyword research tools to identify popular search terms related to your practice and incorporating relevant keywords naturally into your content will further enhance your Google search and other relevant searches. This type of keyword optimization can make all the difference in getting you onto the envied “first page” of results. Link and share that content on your social media platforms to broaden your reach and attract prospective patients.

TIP: An expert SEO team like Officite can perform keyword research and help you rank for keywords for your most profitable services and procedures offered. This allows you to seamlessly plug in an effective SEO strategy. Additionally, you might consider creating long-form content that thoroughly covers a topic with target keywords. This can help establish your practice as an authority in the field and improve your overall search engine results.

3. Optimize for Mobile Users

With the increasing use of smartphones, optimizing your website for mobile users is essential. A mobile website not only improves user experience but also boosts your SEO rankings, especially for medical websites and healthcare practices.

Ensure your website is responsive, meaning it adjusts seamlessly to different screen sizes and devices. For example, ensuring that your site’s navigation is intuitive and easy to use on mobile devices, using mobile-friendly call-to-action buttons that are easy to tap, and testing your website’s mobile-friendliness using tools like Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test are all critical steps. Making necessary adjustments to enhance mobile usability ensures that potential patients can access your services and information easily, regardless of their device.

TIP: Implement Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) to improve your mobile site speed. AMP is a Google-backed project designed to help web pages load faster on mobile devices. Faster load times improve user experience and can positively impact your website traffic and search engine ranking.

4. Improve Page Load Speed

A slow-loading website can negatively impact your SEO rankings and deter potential patients. Optimizing your website’s load speed is essential for steady website traffic. Compressing images and using the correct file formats, minimizing the use of large scripts and heavy plugins, and leveraging browser caching and content delivery networks (CDNs) are all effective strategies.

For example, using image compression tools like TinyPNG or ImageOptim to reduce image file sizes, implementing lazy loading for images and videos, and using tools like Google PageSpeed Insights to identify areas for improvement can help track your website’s load speed. Ensuring fast load times is crucial for retaining visitors and improving your search engine rankings.

TIP: Regularly audit your site for speed performance using tools like GTmetrix or Pingdom. Look for elements that may be slowing down your site, such as outdated plugins or large images, and optimize them accordingly. Also, consider using a lightweight theme if your site is built on a CMS like WordPress.

5. Use Structured Data Markup

Structured data markup (schema markup) helps search engines understand the content of your website better. By adding structured data to your site, you can enhance your search engine listings with rich snippets, such as star ratings, event dates, and practice details. Using medical-specific schema markups to provide detailed information about your services and implementing FAQs schema to highlight common questions and answers about your practice can improve your search visibility. Rich snippets can make your search listings more attractive and informative, increasing the likelihood of clicks from new patients.

TIP: Use Google’s Structured Data Markup Helper to add schema markup to your website easily. Focus on marking up key information such as your practice’s address, phone number, business hours, and patient reviews. This can help your listings stand out in search results and provide potential patients with useful information at a glance. If your website is not showing up on Google, consider making the switch to an Officite website that includes our SEO services. Fill out the form below to learn more.

6. Build Quality Backlinks

Backlinks from reputable websites can significantly boost your SEO rankings through link building. Focus on acquiring quality backlinks by creating shareable content that other websites want to link to, guest blogging on reputable health and medical websites, and building relationships with local businesses and healthcare providers for link exchanges.

For instance, writing guest articles for prominent health blogs or medical publications, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to create joint content or webinars, can help you build a network of quality backlinks. High-quality backlinks act as endorsements from other websites, signaling to search engines that your content is valuable and trustworthy—increasing your likelihood to land on the coveted first page.

TIP: Use tools like Ahrefs to identify and reach out to websites that have linked to similar content. Building relationships with influencers in the healthcare industry can also provide opportunities for link building backlinks. Create valuable resources, such as comprehensive guides or research studies, that others will want to reference and link to.

7. Leverage Social Media

Social media can play a significant role in your SEO strategy and a key driver in patient acquisition. Actively engage with your audience on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Share your content on your practice Facebook business page, interact with potential patients, and encourage them to share their experiences and positive online reviews.

For example, creating a social media calendar to plan and schedule your posts, and using live videos on Facebook or Instagram to host Q&A sessions with your patients can significantly boost your engagement rates.

Including social media sharing buttons on your website to make it easy for visitors to share your content on their social media profiles can drive traffic to your website and improve your visibility. Similarly, make sure your web page/website url is always linked in your social media profiles, especially your Facebook business page. It’s an easy thing to overlook, but makes a big difference in your monthly search volume.

TIP: Use social media analytics tools like Hootsuite or Buffer to track engagement and identify which types of content perform best. Consider converting well-performing organic social media into paid ads. Regularly posting updates, responding to comments, and sharing valuable content can build a strong online community and enhance your SEO efforts.

8. Create a Blog

A blog is a powerful tool for driving traffic to your website and improving your SEO rankings. Regularly publishing informative and engaging blog posts related to your practice can help attract new visitors and keep your current audience engaged.

Topics can include health tips, patient success stories, and the latest medical news. For example, writing blog posts about seasonal health concerns, like “Allergy Management During Spring,” and sharing patient success stories with before-and-after photos (with their consent) can provide valuable information to your patients.

Optimizing your blog posts with relevant keywords, meta descriptions, and internal links to other pages on your website can further enhance your SEO efforts and ultimately attract more patients.

TIP: Use a content calendar to plan your blog posts and ensure regular updates. Consistency is key in maintaining reader interest and improving SEO. Guest blogging opportunities can also expand your reach and introduce your practice to new audiences.

9. Monitor and Analyze Your SEO Performance

Regularly monitoring and analyzing your SEO performance is crucial for making informed decisions and improving your strategies. Use tools like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and SEO-specific tools like SEMrush or Ahrefs to track your website’s performance.

Setting up goals in Google Analytics to track key performance indicators (KPIs) like appointment bookings or contact form submissions, and using heatmaps to see how users interact with your website and identify areas for improvement are effective strategies. Paying attention to metrics such as organic traffic, bounce rate, keyword rankings, and conversion rates can help you gauge the effectiveness of your SEO efforts.

TIP: Set up automated reports in Google Analytics to receive regular updates on your site’s performance. Use A/B testing to experiment with different elements of your site and determine what works best. Regularly reviewing and analyzing your data ensures you can make data-driven decisions to continuously improve your SEO strategy.

10. Optimize for Voice Search

With the rise of voice-activated devices like Alexa and Google Home, optimizing your website for voice search is becoming increasingly important. Voice searches are typically longer and more conversational, so focus on natural language and long-tail keywords.

To illustrate, creating content that answers common patient questions, like “How does chiropractic care relieve back pain?” and using conversational language in your blog posts and FAQs to align with voice search queries can improve your chances of appearing in voice search results.

TIP: Use tools like AnswerThePublic to find common questions related to your practice and create content that answers these queries. Voice search optimization can make your practice more accessible to patients using voice-activated devices, increasing your reach and engagement.

11. Invest in Professional SEO Service

Any form of marketing that employs electronic media and devices can be considered digital marketing. In the broader digital marketing industry, experts craft specialized messages and measure their impact over time by leveraging different channels that target specific points of a user’s journey online.

Healthcare digital marketing is no different from other types of digital marketing campaigns that focus on people who use their phones, tablet, or PC.

When you sign up for Officite to manage your digital marketing campaigns, you gain the advantage of strategy and technology. In addition, you’ll also gain access to exclusive marketing tools and experts who can help you establish a game plan to exceed your practice goals.

Digital marketing uses a variety of channels and materials, including social media posts, Facebook ads, SEO, display ads, and video marketing.

Digital marketing is frequently contrasted with “traditional marketing” techniques such as magazine advertisements, billboards, and even direct mail. Yet, oddly, television is typically grouped with conventional marketing.

Did you know that daily Internet usage among Americans exceeds 75%?

In addition, 43% of Americans go online multiple times per day, and 26% are online “almost constantly.”

These numbers are even more significant for mobile internet users. For example, 89% of Americans go online at least once per day, and 31% are online nearly continuously.

Doctors must use digital marketing for healthcare professionals by building a trusted brand online and striving to create an excellent patient experience for users. Excellent patient experience on your website and social media channels will attract even more patients, and will allow you to test different channels to see which ones work best for your patients, their families, and all those associated with their care.

A healthcare digital marketing strategy enables you to utilize various digital channels like email marketing, search engine optimization, PPC, and Facebook ads. In addition, a powerful strategy allows you to connect with existing patients and attract new ones through optimized content delivery, advertising, social media engagement, and reputation management.

These digital marketing channels help your medical practice create a warm and welcoming brand online with exceptional patient education and convenient services like online patient booking and scheduling.

Leverage the Internet to Build Your Medical Practice’s Reputation and Attract More Patients

Avoid costly errors in establishing your medical practice’s healthcare marketing strategy. Instead, begin your healthcare marketing strategy with best-in-class tools and the guidance of growth consultants who work with healthcare providers in different fields and know your needs at every campaign phase.

The State of Healthcare Marketing in 2023

In a healthcare marketing report by the Harvard Business Review, HBR reiterated that healthcare systems, in general, need to start looking at and understanding patients as consumers to communicate effectively with them, online.

The most significant factor is that patients now have more options in seeking care today than twenty years ago. Therefore, medical practices need to form a strategy centered on the following significant points:

1. How do patients make decisions related to selecting their healthcare providers?

2. What motivates patients to contact medical practices to ask for more information or schedule appointments?

3. Why, how, and where do patients communicate with medical practitioners?

Today, 44% of Americans have an active subscription to Amazon Prime, ironically putting Amazon Prime at the top when utilizing user behavior on the Internet.

A medical practice will benefit significantly from understanding, designing for, and meeting patient preferences online. The process begins by establishing the right metrics and leveraging the correct data.

Officite offers doctors the opportunity to begin collecting actual patient/user behavior on their website through our suite of healthcare digital marketing solutions. Healthcare digital marketing goes beyond patient satisfaction metrics.

Patient satisfaction metrics alone do not suffice. Instead, healthcare practitioners must look at what consumers are doing online and align their digital healthcare marketing strategy to meet patients where they are on the Internet and provide the information they need.

Transform Your Medical Practice on the Internet Starting Today

Effective digital healthcare marketing involves many moving parts and it is easy to get lost in the process without an experienced partner. Officite offers a suite of healthcare marketing solutions that are HIPAA-compliant and are geared toward transforming medical practices on the internet.

Digital Healthcare Marketing Blueprint

Like any other system, digital healthcare marketing has many smaller systems that you can use to achieve your marketing goals. Let’s take a look at the blueprint of a contemporary digital marketing strategy for healthcare providers and medical practices in various disciplines, and see how these techniques and channels may help you reach your goals while maximizing your healthcare marketing budget.

Build and Optimize Your Website with Medical Web Design

Medical web design is the process of improving a website’s structure and organization to better fit the preferences and demands of patients. Consider medical web design as a user-centered approach for redesigning and upgrading your present website.

Ultimately, no two medical offices are the same. A pediatrician’s office, for example, may contain postnatal care posters, but a sports medicine clinic may display images of well-known sports heroes, motivational materials, and maybe physical models relating to sports-related ailments.

A successful medical office should always be designed with their patient population in mind.

In the same way that your medical office serves as the heart of your practice, your website is the central hub for your digital presence. And similarly, it is important to consider your pages layout so it becomes an essential resource for your patients.

With a solid medical design, your website can serve as a platform for establishing your medical practice’s identity and empowering patients with the ability to access vital information and get things done.

Optimized medical web design enables new patients to learn all about your medical services and initiate the steps to obtain care. Consider incorporating a medical website that can also have payment gateway features that allow old and new patients to update their accounts.

Additionally, a feature-rich medical website can help old and new patients to receive event or news updates and answers to common questions.

However, designing your medical website can be daunting. It takes countless hours to hard-code HTML and CSS. Even with the help of a website builder, you may need to commit dozens of hours monthly to optimize your website.

It’s unlikely for medical practitioners to take on the role as a part-time webmaster unless they have some experience in coding and web design. Therefore, it’s vital to first sign up for a platform that offers optimized web design options for your medical practice, so you won’t have to learn everything from scratch.

Get Search Engine Optimization for Doctors

Finding a doctor can be done in several ways, but patients now use the Internet more than ever to locate suitable and independent medical providers.

Within seconds of entering a keyword or phrase into a search engine, patients can now see dozens (if not hundreds) of potential choices for doctors. SEO is the most effective way to ensure that your website appears at the top of relevant search results and organically attract more visitors.

By organically, we mean that your website will appear at the forefront of initial search results without display ads. There’s no contradiction between running ads and using SEO: you generate traffic from both channels, and your medical practice will thrive from both efforts.

Search engines are continually crawling the web for fresh and updated content.

For example, when someone searches for a particular subject, such as “doctors,” the system compiles the results and assigns each page a ranking. So it’s possible to get millions of results with a broad search, but you might only get a few thousand from a narrow one.

The content and tags on your website provide hints as to the nature of the information and its applicability to the search. For example, a value called “domain authority” is assigned to every website, and the higher the value, the higher the website will appear in search engine results. Of course, external factors, such as links from other websites, also play a role.

If your website only appears on the second or third page of search results, that’s not good enough. You must appear on the first page of search results, ideally in the top three spots. The top results receive more clicks and gain from the advantages of good medical website SEO.

Enhance Patient Experience with Medical Marketing Technologies

The medical industry thrives on patient communication and care. Therefore, your website must provide the opportunity to showcase your medical practice and actively engage previous and new patients in meaningful ways.

You can accomplish this while focusing on your healthcare marketing goals with medical marketing technologies.

Medical marketing technologies grew plenty from two decades ago, and we can confidently say that these technologies increase not just patient satisfaction but they also bridge the gap between patients and doctors quite easily. By enriching the online experience and by providing endless conveniences to patients looking to connect with a doctor to ask questions and schedule an appointment.

The sheer number of patient communication touchpoints is staggering and may result in many missed opportunities to address feedback, or foster patient satisfaction. Loyalty and patient satisfaction are frequently contingent upon a healthcare provider’s communication skills. Healthcare marketing technologies help your medical practice communicate better on the Internet, where everyone is looking for a healthcare provider.

A telehealth platform provides increased patient security while providing seamless video conferencing capabilities, administrative and billing tools, and website integration. The pandemic showed the medical industry how vital the Internet is for the availability and continuity of care. As the demand for telehealth services continues, it’s best to refine your website’s telehealth offerings this year.

A doctor portal simplifies different processes and centralizes communication between doctors and patients. A dedicated doctor portal allows you to manage appointments, monitor website performance, and perform other tasks efficiently within a single hub.

Automate Patient Scheduling

Online booking for doctors offers a simple interface for patients to schedule an appointment with their doctors. In addition, an online booking solution is easy to customize and allows doctors to book more appointments with patients online. Whether the traffic is coming from display ads, social media, or SEO efforts, the impact would be positive: patients can schedule appointments with a press of a button, and your staff will have an easier time monitoring and tracking these appointments from your medical office.

As healthcare consumers demand greater access and convenience, brand loyalty is declining. Patients who were once loyal to a particular organization or independent medical practice will transition to doctors to receive the desired experience. Many patients have already made a change.

More than 1/3 of patients have switched healthcare providers in the past two years, citing a lack of accessibility as the primary reason for the change.

How can independent medical practices prevent more attrition in the coming years?

One straightforward solution is improving access and convenience in the digital realm. For example, adding online booking for doctors typically results in greater patient satisfaction, putting your independent medical practice in the same sandbox as older competitors.

Online scheduling easily accomplishes both objectives.

If your independent medical practice does not offer online patient booking, it is time to add an online doctor booking to your website and social media profiles.

This fundamental healthcare marketing feature offers immediate patient satisfaction. Nearly 75% of patients would choose a doctor offering this feature online.

The transition to online scheduling provides your practice with a competitive advantage and relieves your front office personnel of administrative duties. As a result, your team can concentrate on patient visits and requests with fewer schedule-related duties.

Online booking for doctors stands as a critical differentiator. Online scheduling can help increase long-term practice growth and new patient acquisition.

Patient convenience is a huge priority for today’s busy patients. In addition to insurance coverage, patients rank convenience as the most influential factor when selecting a healthcare provider.

Since setting an appointment with a doctor is frequently a patient’s first interaction with a medical office, it is essential to provide a streamlined, reasonable process that leaves a positive impression.

When patients have the option to schedule appointments online, they can do so at their convenience without having to contact your scheduler or front desk during business hours. Online scheduling can also assist you in converting new visitors to patients when your phone line is busy, or your medical office is closed.

Digital Reputation Management for Doctors

When consumers are seeking a specialist or a certain physician, they often look them up online first. At present, well over 69% of patients conduct local business searches monthly or even more often. This is all while 94% of patients rely on online patient reviews before calling to schedule an appointment.

Doctors who ignore their internet reputations or don’t know how to manage them risk losing valued patients. And in today’s digital marketing environment, patient acquisition is everything. As a result, digital reputation management serves as a considerable part of the patient acquisition process.

The data is clear: independent medical practitioners cannot afford not to have medical online reviews management.

Monitoring, maintaining, and enhancing a doctor’s or medical practice’s internet reputation are the pillars of digital reputation management for doctors.

Your internet profiles must be managed, and any unfavorable information posted about your medical practice must be monitored, reviewed, and, if possible, removed.

As we’ve already established, patients conduct their homework on doctors online before scheduling an appointment. As a result, a doctor’s ability to gain new patients is strongly influenced by their internet reputation.

Poor online reputation can result in a loss of patients. Therefore, doctors must keep up with their internet reputations on Yelp, Google, and Healthgrades. Patients should be encouraged to post reviews, and any complaints should be addressed immediately. Without consistent digital reputation management, complaints may be left unsolved for weeks or months, and who knows what impact those reviews would have already had on your medical practice.

Implementing a crisis management strategy during unfavorable events is also integral to medical reputation management.

When a doctor takes the time to manage their online reputation, they can be assured that their patients will find only positive, up-to-date information from the doctor.

The doctor’s ability to gain new patients and keep the ones they already have can be negatively affected. Patients are doing more research online before choosing a physician. To choose a physician, they research their options online.

A doctor’s positive online reputation influences patient decision-making. So you can expect more calls and more appointments once you set the gears of digital reputation management into motion.

Independent medical practitioners must build credibility and trust with the public via ratings and reviews.

Bad digital feedback about doctors can still be addressed. Instead of looking away from these negative reviews (or lack of feedback online), you can start taking steps to start building a better-looking online reputation.

The process initially may involve handling unfavorable feedback or responding to incorrect information posted online.

The spread of false or damaging information might harm a doctor’s reputation and ability to gain new patients.

Reputation management helps medical professionals mitigate the effects of negative publicity.

When you watch your internet reputation, you can be assured that everything is as it should be. It’s pretty annoying when a practice’s website has out-of-date material that could waste a patient’s time.

Overall, a good internet reputation is crucial to the success of any organization, and the medical profession is no exception. A solid reputation may bring in new clients, keep the ones they already have happy, and help your medical practice expand amidst the recession.

Running PPC Ads and Facebook Ads

Medical clinics have successfully used Facebook ads to attract new patients and book more appointments. Advertising on their extensive network, which includes Instagram, enables you to reach potential new patients based on their location, platform activities, and demographic.

Instagram and Facebook ads typically appear in the user’s newsfeed while perusing other content. However, these ads can also be displayed in other locations. These ads can be videos, GIFs, or images matched with compelling copy.

Facebook has many advantages for medical offices looking to attract new patients and book appointments. Facebook advertising is highly visual and engaging and remains an excellent method to capture the attention of potential patients by offering and telling captivating stories through ads.

Using this “push” promotion technique, you can introduce yourself to a broader audience of potential patients.

Using Google ads allows independent medical practitioners to target audiences interested in medical services. Google Ads also allow advertisers to track whether or not people click on the ad or not.

Google Ads is as simple and effective as it gets.

Google’s PPC (or Pay-Per-Click) ads appear above organic results, so if you’re starting with SEO, you don’t have to worry about boosting your patient acquisition efforts in the first few weeks or months.

PPC ad spend is under your control and can be adjusted as you see fit. PPC advertising can be budgeted for, and the total cost is under your control. In addition, pay-per-click advertising gives you control over where your messages appear. This means that PPC can be used to create highly focused marketing programs.

PPC shows your adverts to the right people at the appropriate time. PPC can generate traffic, sales, and patients rapidly. You can quickly increase patient acquisition rates by using pay-per-click advertising.

PPC helps you get more visitors online for less money and in less time.

Return on investment is the holy grail of any marketing effort. However, regarding increasing your return on investment, PPC is one of the most effective marketing strategies.

PPC and SEO go hand in hand and can rapidly generate conversions from targeted visitors to your website or landing page with its help.

Some patients favor organic search, while others like ads. Combining SEO with PPC ensures you cover all bases. Therefore, displaying paid and organic search results indicates that your content is more relevant than your competitors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a medical website different from a regular website?

A digital healthcare marketing website is specifically designed to promote healthcare products, services, and information. It may have a dedicated section or page for healthcare-related content, such as articles, blogs, and medical research, which a regular website may not have.

Digital healthcare marketing websites must comply with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA, FDA, and other industry-specific regulations. This means that the website must be designed to protect patient privacy, ensure security, and provide accurate and truthful information.

Digital healthcare marketing websites must provide a positive user experience, especially for patients who are seeking health-related information or services.

The website should be easy to navigate, have a clear and concise message, and provide useful information to the user. A digital healthcare marketing website should have a clear call-to-action (CTA) that encourages the user to act, such as making an appointment, requesting more information, or subscribing to a newsletter. The CTA should be prominently displayed and designed to drive conversions.

More and more people are accessing websites on their mobile devices, which means that a digital healthcare marketing website must be optimized for mobile devices. This includes having a responsive design that adapts to different screen sizes, fast loading times, and mobile-friendly content.

What’s an example of a healthcare regulation that a digital healthcare marketing website must comply with?

One example of a healthcare regulation that digital healthcare marketing websites must comply with is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in the United States. HIPAA is a federal law that sets national standards for protecting individuals’ medical records and other personal health information (PHI).

Under HIPAA, digital healthcare marketing websites must ensure that any PHI they collect and store is kept confidential and secure. They must implement appropriate technical, physical, and administrative safeguards to protect PHI from unauthorized access, use, or disclosure.

For example, if a digital healthcare marketing website collects personal health information from patients, such as their name, address, medical history, or insurance information, it must have measures in place to ensure that this information is protected. This may include using secure servers, encryption, firewalls, and other security technologies.

In addition, if the website is used to facilitate healthcare transactions, such as scheduling appointments or processing insurance claims, it must comply with HIPAA regulations related to electronic transactions and code sets.

Failure to comply with HIPAA regulations can result in significant penalties and fines, as well as damage to the organization’s reputation. Therefore, it is essential for digital healthcare marketing websites to have a robust HIPAA compliance program in place to protect patients’ privacy and ensure regulatory compliance.

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and how can it grow my practice?

The focus of medical website SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is to improve the visibility and ranking of a medical website in SERPs. Medical SEO involves optimizing the website’s content, structure, and other factors to make it more attractive to search engines, such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

The goal of medical website SEO is to increase the website’s visibility, traffic, and conversions by ranking higher in relevant search engine results. This is important for medical websites because it can help attract more patients, increase brand awareness, and establish the website as a trusted source of medical information.

How can email marketing help retain and attract patients to my practice?

Email marketing is a powerful tool for medical websites to engage with their audience, build relationships, and promote their products and services. The first step is to build an email list of subscribers who have opted-in to receive emails from the medical website. This can be done through website sign-ups, newsletter subscriptions, or other lead generation tactics.

Once the email list is established, it is important to define the target audience and segment the list based on demographics, interests, or behavior. This allows for more targeted and personalized email campaigns. The content of the emails should be engaging, informative, and relevant to the target audience.

This can include healthcare tips, news, promotions, or educational content. The emails should be visually appealing, with a clear and concise message, and a call-to-action that encourages the recipient to act.

The emails should be scheduled and sent at appropriate intervals, such as weekly or monthly, to avoid overwhelming the recipients. The email campaigns should be analyzed and optimized based on open rates, click-through rates, and conversions. This allows for continuous improvement and better engagement with the target audience.

The Need-To-Knows of Search

Even if you get most of your patients through word of mouth or referrals, getting on the front page of search engines should be a priority for your practice. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is key to getting found by local patients and helping your website rank higher in search results to increase your online visibility. Our free guide is here to help you learn the ins and outs of getting to the top of Google.

Here’s what you need to know about search engines, and how to start climbing toward the first page:

8.5 BILLION
Google processes ~ 8.5
billion searches every day
-Internet Live Stats, 2022

1 Billion Searches A Day
Google receives more
than 1 billion health-related searches a day,
averaging 70,000 searches
per minute.
-Medium, 2020

90%
90% of users say they were likely to click on the front
set of results.
-Search Engine Land, 2018

Two ways to better rankings:

1: SEM (Search Engine Marketing)

SEM immediately places an ad for your practice on the front page of Google. You set a monthly budget, and pay Google a small amount every time someone clicks on your ad. For this reason, SEM is often referred to as PPC, or pay-per-click advertising. It receives fewer clicks than the organic search results, but works instantly.

2: SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

SEO refers to a collection of strategies and techniques that aim to help a website earn a higher placement in the organic section of search results. It can be difficult to earn good results, and the process takes a long time, but first-page SEO is incredibly valuable.

Top 4 SEO Strategies

1: A mobile-friendly and secure website

Google will penalize your site if it doesn’t have at least these two capabilities. We recommend responsive design so that your website will display perfectly on phones and tablets. Also be sure that your site uses HTTPS security, or Google will tell potential visitors that it’s unsecure.

2: Content

Content refers to all the information on your site. If Google determines it’s fresh and relevant, you will rank higher than other sites. Prioritize your content for the best results, especially in areas like:
• Home page
• Patient education
• Pictures and videos
• Blog entries

3: Backlinks/citations

When another website includes a link to your website, this is called a backlink, or a citation.
Earn links from relevant and respected websites, and Google will rank your site higher than those with no links.

4: Meta title (title tags)

Optional code in the section of your website’s HTML which tells Google “this is what I’m about!” Optimize it for common search terms like your location and specialties.

Top 6 SEM Strategies

1: Negative Keywords

Allows you to exclude words you do NOT want to be found for, e,g, “free,” “budget,” “malpractice”.

2: Configure Extensions

Make your PPC ads more prominent, more informative, and more functional. Add a phone call button, location information, etc.

3: Link to Specific Subpages

Don’t use your homepage as a destination URL. Instead, use a specific subpage so you can determine which patients reached your website through a PPC ad.

4: Be Specific

Highlight specific services you want to be found for, e,g, “pediatric doctor” instead of “doctor.” Specificity raises relevance, which raises search engine ranking, which raises ROI.

5: Use Multiple Ads Per Adgroup

An “adgroup” is the idea or service you’re trying to rank for. Creating different ads with slight differences within each adgroup will allow you to determine which perform well, and which aren’t worth paying for.

6: Use a Schedule

You can adjust when your ads will display within Google Ads. This will allow you to stretch your PPC budget over a greater period of time. Ramp up during slow periods, and remove advertising on days when your practice is closed.

Did you know that there are roughly 3.5 billion Google searches every day? And nearly 5% (or 175 million!) of those searches related to health topics? That’s why it’s so important your healthcare practice employs an effective Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy to get noticed by high-intent consumers in a cluttered space.

Understanding the fundamentals of SEO can help people find your website and book your services. With effective SEO strategies, you can achieve high rankings on Google that drive your website’s visibility. Despite what many people may think, SEO is more than just picking keywords and repeating them throughout your online platforms. Getting to the top of searches, gaining visibility, and attracting people to your practice takes strategy and a well thought-out plan. But don’t worry! With a little help, your practice will reap the benefits in no time.

Whether you’re just getting started or need to fine-tune your website, following these 8 steps will help you boost your SEO and increase your patient acquisition.

Check Your Website’s Domain Authority Score

Your domain authority score is a measure of how well your site ranks on Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs). Scores are graded numerically from 0 to 100 and the better your grade, the higher your website is rated.

Your score is calculated through machine learning that predicts how likely Google is to show your web domain when someone has a relevant search. A domain score over 60 is ideal and shows you have quality domain authority. Scores between 50 and 60 are considered good, between 40 and 50 will net you an average ranking, but if your score is 40 or below, you should review your site and find ways to improve.

Set Up Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free resource that provides users with their own personal dashboard explaining how people have found your website and what they do on your site once they are on it. Essentially, you can track the critical statistics and insights that help you better understand your website’s trends and traffic.

This data is like a guide book for how to optimize your website and make the most of your website. You’ll learn which keywords people use to find your site, which pages are the most popular, and how long visitors stay. Additionally, Google Analytics users can see what actions people take on your website like signing up for email lists or booking appointments. With that information, you can learn how to adjust and optimize your website to convert more people from online researchers to new patients.

Set Up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster

With Google Search Console (GSC), you can access high-value information about your search traffic like search impressions, clicks, click-through rate (CTR), and much more. This tool also helps you identify and fix issues like malware, server errors, and site load issues that can affect your search performance.

Another popular search engine, Bing, has their own version of this tool called Bing Webmaster. You can trust your site is indexed in the Bing search engine, resolve issues that prevent higher search rankings, and monitor backlinks.

Submit a Site Map

A site map is a file that you provide to search engines detailing the layout of your site. It includes links, videos, photos, and all other files contained on the website and how they all relate to each other to form the site as a whole. Submitting a site map helps search engines understand the outline and structure of your website and shows the AI how to crawl your site more efficiently, leading to improved views. This will ensure the most important pages on your website show up first in search rankings.

Doing this will dramatically improve traffic to your site by telling search engines which pages to prioritize and how people can find your site. You can submit site maps on both GSC and Bing Webmaster.

Create Quality Backlinks

Backlinks are links from one website to a page on another website. These factor into search engine rankings because they show that others find the information on your site noteworthy and worth connecting their pages to.

Having 60+ quality backlinks is an excellent goal for most sites. Between 40 and 50 is good, but below 40 is subpar. You may be tempted to use shortcuts in order to get more backlinks, but it is important to make sure your backlinks are high-quality. If your site is linked to a lot of disreputable or irrelevant sites, it will make you look bad by association.

One way to create quality backlinks is to set up a physician profile on WebMD. Leveraging WebMD’s high domain authority and good standing in the medical community as a resource of information can help legitimize your practice.

Off-Site Authority Builders

One way to increase trust for your website is to have your content featured on an external, trusted website. These are known as Authority Builders, which are reputable websites that are known as reliable sources of information. By having your content featured on a site like this, it legitimizes the information you provide and directs people to your website for more information and can even help book more appointments. Also, high-profile sites like this usually show up at the top of search rankings, so they can help attract attention from people looking for expertise who may not otherwise have found your website online.

A perfect example of an off-site authority builder is WebMD. WebMD has a domain authority score of 94 out of 100, making it one of the most trusted resources for high-quality health information on the internet. Creating a profile on WebMD allows you to leverage their high domain authority back to you, increasing exposure and securing new patients in the process.

In addition to WebMD, you should look for opportunities to build a presence on other high-authority sites, such as Vitals.com, Yelp, RateMD, and more.

Monitor Reviews on Authority-Building Sites

Did you know that more than 90% of people consult online reviews before making healthcare decisions? Additionally, around 60% of people say they select their healthcare providers because of positive online reviews.

It’s important to monitor and manage your online reviews to ensure you have a positive online reputation. Many authority-building sites — such as WebMD, Vitals, US News & World Report, Google Business Profiles, and others — feature patient reviews.

The best way to garner rave reviews is to be a practice that leaves patients feeling good about their interactions. No amount of SEO training can replace excellent patient experiences. Negative reviews are part of the process and they will occasionally pop up, but doing your best to maintain a respected practice is your best defense against them.

Patient reviews found on credible sites often rank higher on search engines. By using reputation management software, you can be notified about new reviews and respond to any and all feedback. That way, you’ll show people you care about patient responses and fortify your online reputation.

Set Up Your Google Business Profile

Google Business Profiles is a free tool that allows you to establish your business on Google. You will be able to add photos of your practice, post any special offers, and any critical updates. It’s also a place for consumers to leave reviews and ask questions. Plus, once you are established with a Google Profile, your business will show up on Google Maps making it easier for patients to find your office.

You can add useful information about your practice like your hours and what services you offer on your Google Business Profile. You can also engage directly with prospective patients who have questions about your practice, providing them with all the information they need. On your Google Business Profile dashboard, you can also find helpful insights about how people find your profile and keep your information up-to-date to improve search performance.

Conclusion

Incorporating this SEO checklist into your digital marketing strategy will help deliver the patient acquisition results you’re looking for.

Now more than ever, consumers are turning to the web to find providers, read reviews, and engage in informed health decision-making.

In the past, word-of-mouth referrals and repeat patients were the most reliable ways to grow and sustain any medical practice. But in the age of the internet, online strategies are now the number one way to market healthcare services.

More and more people are turning to Google to help them find the medical care they need. With that in mind, SEO for doctors can help private practices reach a wider audience, find new patients, and build a trusted digital presence that lasts.

So, what is SEO? The term stands for “search engine optimization,” and it relates to how well your website ranks on Google searches. You have likely used Google to find a service or product yourself. Those companies also use SEO to show up in early rankings. You can boost your practice’s SEO by building a high-quality website and creating excellent content, but the process can be a bit complicated and labor-intensive. For this reason, many healthcare providers hire marketing agencies to handle SEO for them so that they can focus on what matters most — their patients.

However, even if you decide to go it alone, you can use SEO to start growing your web presence as a physician and reach more people looking for your services in your city.

How Important Are Search Engines? Google It

Search engines are the most popular way to find information. An ever-increasing number of people search for medical websites and providers online, often choosing those who appear near the top of the Google search results. So, if you’re a physician who wants to grow your business, an SEO-friendly web presence is vital.

With proper SEO, search engines can find (index) your practice’s address, phone number, and other contact information for people who need your services the most. This makes it easy for potential patients to reach out to you for appointments or questions.

Additionally, search engines will show your practice’s reviews to users, which can help you build a positive reputation in your community. According to a 2020 survey, a whopping 79% of people trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations from friends and family. As you start to collect good reviews, potential patients will see them and trust your practice more — without ever stepping foot in your facility.

SEO is priceless for any medical practice’s long-term success. It allows you to generate more web traffic, build a positive reputation, and become more established throughout your community.

SEO Helps You Reach Searchers With Intent

The importance of SEO goes beyond just getting your private practice’s information out there. When you properly optimize your medical website, you’ll appear at the top of Google search results for patients searching with intent to make an appointment with a doctor.

For example, as a cardiologist, SEO can put you at the top of the search results when someone types “cardiologist near me” into Google or another search engine. Anyone searching for that term is likely considering booking an appointment with a cardiologist, and proper optimization helps put your practice right in front of them.

Traffic Is a Good Thing When It Relates to Your Medical Website

It’s estimated that 97% of people learn more about local businesses on the internet than they do anywhere else. High web traffic is crucial for any business because it translates into clients, and in the case of medical providers, patients.

Medical websites that appear at the top of Google are more likely to be clicked and book patients. What’s more, research has shown that 75% of internet users don’t even click past the first page when viewing their search results. That means getting your website to the top of the search results is one of the best things you can do for your private practice’s success.

While SEO for doctors and practices can be a long process, the traffic generation benefits can add up for years to come.

SEO Statistics

When considering whether to optimize your medical website, here are some important SEO statistics to think about:

76% of people who search for something nearby visit a business that appeared in their search within a day. For medical providers, a high ranking on Google can directly translate to same-day calls to book appointments.

Your brand awareness can increase by 46% simply by showing up early in search results.

51% of smartphone users have discovered a new business or product when searching on their phone.

72% of internet users in the U.S. have used a search engine to learn more about a health question in the past year.

With these numbers in mind, it’s easy to see how valuable search engine optimization is for helping potential patients find your practice.

Overall, higher traffic on your page equals better results. You’ll receive more calls, contact form submissions, and appointments. Beyond that, people who discover your practice through a search engine may even recommend your services to friends and family.

Become the Leader for Lead Generation

SEO can bring more eyes to your private practice’s website, but if you want to take your digital marketing a step further, you can use the increased web traffic to generate qualified leads on potential patients.

Many people are at different stages of their health journey. Some may be looking for professional health advice, but aren’t quite ready to head to the doctor yet. They might have questions about symptoms or conditions in your realm of expertise. You can attract these people to your website by answering their questions with high-quality, relevant content on your website.

Once users are on your website, offer them guides on different conditions, access to free webinars, or other relevant, downloadable content (something of value) in exchange for their email address. Then you can continue to provide them with free, useful content straight to their inbox.

These prospective patients may not need to book an appointment right now. But with a well thought out lead generation strategy in place, your practice can remain top of mind as both a medical provider and reliable resource for their health.‌

Traffic Goes Up, Costs Go Down

The truth is that it often takes time to see the results of SEO in your practice. That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth it. Unlike traditional advertising campaigns, SEO is a stable, slow-growing form of marketing that will bring you higher traffic for years to come. With increased traffic, you’ll be able to spend less money on other forms of marketing later on. People searching for doctors will come across your site organically thanks to the web presence that you’ve built over time.

Increased web traffic can make a world of difference for any business — and it’s much more cost effective than continuously running ads or cold calling to gain new patients.

Effectiveness of SEO Compared to Other Forms of Marketing

Here are a few of the things you can expect from SEO compared to traditional web advertisements:

You will build authority around your business. If your website appears at the top of Google’s search results, it lends a sense of credibility and trust to your practice’s name.

You can generate valuable leads at a lower cost over time. With more potential patients viewing your site, you have more opportunities to build relationships through email marketing.

Search engine optimization provides a long-lasting bang for your buck. SEO is a strategy designed to produce results over time. Unlike ads that only run for a few days or weeks, it can help patients find you on Google and other search engines for years to come.

All of this is not to say that Google ads or pay-per-click campaigns aren’t useful. In fact, they’re also great forms of marketing for medical websites. But overall, the best strategy for bringing in new patients is a combination of different marketing avenues, and SEO for doctors plays a significant role in that success.

The Bottom Line on SEO for Doctors

If you’re a physician who wants to grow your private practice, digital marketing and SEO may not be the first things that come to mind. All healthcare practices need effective strategies to build their reputations and bring in patients. And with so many people using search engines to find medical services near them, SEO is one of the best strategies a physician can invest in.

A well-optimized website that ranks high in search results promotes trust and generates a stable flow of traffic that evolves into leads and new patients down the line. It can help you fill your appointment book effortlessly and spend less money on outbound marketing in the future.

If you want to get started building your company’s online presence, Officite is an option that offers expert service packages to help you create a website that ranks on Google. You’ll receive an SEO-optimized medical website, access to a doctor’s portal, HIPAA compliant email and forms, and more.

The Free Google Tools You Need To Give Your Practice a Boost

What can one say about the importance of Google that hasn’t already been said? As a search engine, it is the clear leader, and appearing in Google search results is essential for getting found online. But Google is more than a search engine, it’s a marketing machine with robust tools you can leverage to grow your practice.

In this article, we’ll take a look at several of those tools and how you can make them work for you, beginning with one that you should start using right now.

Google My Business

When marketing to new patients, geography is a key consideration. The fact that Google My Business (GMB) is highly effective at targeting local searchers is a large part of what makes GMB perhaps the most essential of all Google’s tools.

When you claim your GMB listing, your practice will show up in local searches near the top of the page, in a prominent area called the “Local Pack,” where you show up on a list sorted by distance from the searcher.

When the searcher clicks on your listing within the Local Pack, they will see more information about your practice, including

Your address and phone number

A link to your website

Your hours

Patients can leave reviews, which show up in your listing and help lend credibility to your practice. There is even a place where searchers can ask you questions, providing an excellent opportunity for you to engage with and win them over before they even set foot in your office.

Google Ads (PPC)

Pay Per Click (PPC) ads are a quick way to get to the top of Google search results and can be targeted at promoting your practice’s high-value services.

It works like this: anytime somebody searches for a keyword that you have targeted, Google places your ad in a premier spot. Every time somebody clicks on that ad, you pay Google an agreed-upon amount. The amount you pay for each click depends upon the keyword or phrase you have selected. Done correctly, the return on your investment is excellent, with most ads making back an average of $2 for every dollar spent.

And while your ads go away as soon as you stop paying, you can still use PPC as a part of your long-term strategy. Monitor the performance of each of the keywords you target and use that data to inform your Organic SEO efforts. Incorporate the most successful keywords into website content, including blog topics. It’s a way to gain even more value from this already valuable tool.

Google Analytics

To maximize your marketing efforts, you need to be able to peek behind the scenes. Google Analytics is a tool that will let you do just that. With it, you can learn important information like:

How long are people staying on your site?

What is your site’s bounce rate?

How many visitors does your site have?

Are site visitors new or returning users?

Use it to understand your web traffic, how users are navigating your site, and which keywords have been effective. It’s a way to improve both your SEO and the relevance of your site to your patients.

Google Keyword Planner

Keyword Planner lets you see metrics for specific keywords related to your practice. It provides information for individual keywords and phrases about:

Average monthly search volume

Level of competition

Estimated cost-per-click for specific keywords related to your practice

You’ll not only get metrics from the keywords you select yourself, but will also receive keyword suggestions, so you can find the right ones to target the new patients that will help you grow your practice.

Google Trends

This simple-to-use tool lets you analyze the topics that potential patients may be searching for and can yield very valuable information. Just enter your search term at Google Trends then click “search.” You can narrow down results by location, time, and category to gain even more insight. You can even compare keywords within a specific category.

For example, if you are a podiatrist looking to grow your practice, you might want to compare keywords such as foot injury, plantar warts, bunion, heel spur, and diabetic neuropathy. Using Google Trends, you’ll be able to see how many times each particular keyword has been searched for and, particularly, if and when they have been searched for in your general location.

You can then use that information to optimize your site to show up in more searches and higher in search results.

Google Search Console

Google Search Console contains tools and reports that you can use to measure site traffic and site performance and help you fix issues so that your site performs at its best. It not only provides content analytics but also has a way for you to submit content, such as sitemaps and individual URLs for crawling, to help with search results. It even sends alerts when it finds potential issues with your site.

Google Alerts

Google Alerts is exactly what it sounds like, a tool that sends you notifications about topics and events that are of interest to you. Just enter your terms and choose to receive notifications daily or weekly.

Alerts can be useful for

Monitoring mentions of your practice

Following industry trends

Keeping up-to-date on trending news stories

Sourcing articles and content to share

Keeping an eye on your competitor’s activity

It’s a simple way to keep an eye on anything that may be of relevance to you and your practice.

Summing it Up

More than just being just a hub to seek out and gather information, Google offers free tools that you can use to raise your profile and get found by the patients who are looking for a doctor just like you. Our team uses these tools along with several others to help you connect with local patients in your area. To learn about how we can help your practice get found easier on Google visit officite.com/seo to learn more.

Back in 2019, nobody could foresee what 2020 had in store. As events unfolded and the pandemic took hold, we all had to learn to deal with a world that was changing, seemingly by the day. With change as the new constant, and social distancing the new norm, people have relied more than ever on the Internet to connect with friends and family, as well as to shop for everyday essentials and research service providers, including medical professionals. You can take advantage of this shift and reach new potential patients with the right set of online and digital tools.

What follows is an overview of some of the most important things to consider, so you can keep your practice running, growing, and even thriving, into 2021 and beyond.

1. WEBSITE DESIGN + FUNCTION

Your website is likely to be the first direct interaction that most potential patients will have with your practice. There are a few things that you can do to make sure that your first impression is a positive one.

Make it functional on every device

Keep in mind that patients are not accessing your site from just a desktop or laptop computer anymore. 33% of all media time is spent on smartphones and 80% of social media time on mobile devices. Make sure your site is optimized to run on these devices. It won’t just look better and be easier to use, it will load quicker, too. Every 1-second delay in mobile page loads can reduce conversions by as much as 20%. That means missed opportunities.

HTTPS is about security — and more

HTTP (HyperText Protocol Transfer) is what your web browser uses to load websites, but there is an updated version that you should be using called HTTPS. The “S” stands for “Secure,” as all communication is encrypted. And while having a secure website is important in and of itself, there are other benefits to using HTTPS, as well.

For one, secure websites tend to rank higher on Google searches than nonsecure ones. And while there are other variables that also affect your search engine results rankings (more on that later), HTTPS can help you get your practice found in more searches.

Secure sites also run better on Google Chrome — the most-popular web browser — which helps create a better user experience for site visitors. Chrome labels these sites as “secure” giving users more trust in your site and, by extension, in your practice.

2. RANK HIGHER

Research has shown that 75% of people making an internet search never go past the first page of results. So it is important to get to that first page, and to rank as high as possible in the results. There are a couple of ways to get there.

Organic Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Organic SEO refers to a collection of long term, ongoing strategies designed to help you achieve higher rankings without paying for advertisements. It delivers the most valuable results but is difficult to achieve and maintain.

Google crawls the web looking for the words that people are searching for and, when it finds those words, and content that its algorithm has determined as relevant, ranks those sites higher on results pages. You can attempt to build good SEO on your own by adding content focused on attracting your ideal patients, earning backlinks, and learning basic HTML for quick fixes.

But there is more to it than just choosing the right words; to get to the top of search results, you need to use a combination of strategies. These include geotagging, fine-tuning meta descriptions, data highlighting, schema markup, and repairing crawl errors.

On average, organic SEO takes about six months to see results. It is a continual effort, but it is crucial, and the most powerful tool you can wield in the ongoing fight to get seen.

Shoot to the top of the rankings with Pay Per Click (PPC) ads

For practices looking for a quicker solution, PPC ads are the quickest way to the top of the rankings. PPC gets you to the top virtually instantly, and guarantees you’ll receive high rankings for certain keywords. You pay Google an agreed-upon amount every time someone clicks on it, and in return, Google places your ad in a premier spot. And done correctly the return on your investment is excellent, with most ads making an average of $2 for every dollar spent. However, once you stop paying, your ads go away.

Enrich your site with good content

Filling your website with content like blog posts, videos, and patient educational materials does more than just provide information that your patients might be looking for. They are also another potent source of SEO, including backlinks (links from another site into your own), which is key for improving search results.

Blogging can improve your practice’s credibility by demonstrating your expertise, and engage your audience with your personal take on subjects that matter to them. Videos keep users’ attention and keep users on your site almost twice as long as websites that don’t have videos. Adding patient education materials from credible associations like the AMA or other similar associations can improve your credibility and help establish you as an expert in your field.

Don’t forget to update your content regularly, to keep it fresh and stay relevant with search engines and patients alike.

3. PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR ONLINE REVIEWS

When searching for a new healthcare provider, patients trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. In fact, healthcare providers rank #3 on a list of businesses where reviews matter most; it’s often the final piece that patients use when making their decision.

Reputation Management lets the world see the best of you

You can stay in control of your reviews by regularly checking and responding to Google, Healthgrades, etc. If that proves overwhelming, reputation management software can help. Reputation management does a number of things to help make sure that you can gather as many positive reviews as possible.

You’ll be notified when someone mentions your practice on major sites like Google+, Yelp, and Healthgrades, so you can then automatically post the best testimonials directly to your website. Add a widget to your website and your emails to help you gather more reviews, then post those reviews on your website and Google Business listing to help you stand out from the crowd and increase trust in your practice. It even helps you separate real reviews from fake reviews to protect your practice’s reputation.

Replying to reviews shows you care

For positive reviews, express how glad you are that you were able to meet or exceed their expectations, and let them know that you are looking forward to seeing them again. When you do receive a negative review, think about how you can address the issues that were brought up. Apologize for the shortcomings, and ask for an opportunity to do better in the future.

By responding to both positive and reviews in a thoughtful manner, you are demonstrating that you take patient concerns to heart. And while you don’t need to change your entire practice for each negative review, if you see a pattern emerging, it might be wise to address it. Your practice — your business — will be stronger for it.

SUMMING IT ALL UP

While nobody can know for sure what 2021 might look like, you can get your practice ready by taking advantage of these tips, to help you reach the people you want to reach, and to help you adapt for whatever changes come next.

If your online marketing efforts haven’t been meeting your practice’s goals or if you have yet to build an online presence for your practice and want to be able to reach new clients in 2020, then here are the most important parts of an online presence that your practice must implement to stand out in the new year.

Professional Website Design and Services

As the web has evolved, so have clients’ expectations. They now expect a professional design that functions seamlessly on any device. Visitors will usually form an opinion of a business based on their website within 15 seconds of visiting it. After that, they will decide to stay or go elsewhere.

Web design is complex, but there are a few principles you can implement right away. The first place to start is to make sure that your website is easy to read, easy to navigate, and easy to engage with.

Easy to Read Fonts

The fonts you select for your website should be simple and easy to read. Fonts like Arial and Verdana are available on almost any computer by default and commonly recommended for readability on screens.

Color and Design

Choose colors that are easy on the eyes. Save bright colors for your call to action buttons (e.g. “Schedule Appointment”). Don’t worry about blank or white space; it makes the website easier to read and navigate.

Images That Impact

Include images of your practice, doctors, and office staff. Imagery can often grab a visitor’s attention more effectively than text alone.

Clear Call to Action

If visitors can’t tell what the next step is, they’ll quickly leave your website. Prompt them to fill out a contact form, schedule an appointment, or read helpful content.

Mobile Responsive

Over half of all web traffic takes place over mobile devices, like a smartphone or tablet. A website that’s not built for these devices will be difficult or impossible to use.

Mobile responsive design is a website that is built to adjust itself to any screen size and any device. This gives you a single version of your website that loads quickly, is easy to maintain, and stands out in Google Search results.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Even if you have the best website out there, Google still needs to be able to find it. So how do you show up on Google and move towards the top of search results? There are hundreds of factors that get you there, but these are the most important ones:

Quality Content

Content must be relevant to the lives of visitors or else they will realize that what they are looking for can’t be found on your website and will go elsewhere. As you get to know your clients more, fine-tune your content to better suit their needs.

Repeat Traffic

Visitors are likely to come back to your website regularly and share your content with others if it contains valuable, relevant content. This is especially true when your website includes patient education. Google also considers repeat traffic to be a good sign that your website is helping its visitors and is more likely to reward this kind of website in search rankings.

On-Page SEO

The words that you type into the Google search bar are called keywords. On-page SEO optimizes the content of your website to more closely match the keywords that people use to search for a provider or more information about your services, making it more likely for them to find your website first.

Dwell Time

This is the average amount of time that visitors spend on your website. When they spend more time on your website, Google assumes that they are engaged with your website and found it to be more valuable.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC) Search Marketing

The above are examples of organic search engine optimization. Organic SEO generally takes four to six months to fully gain traction in search results.

Pay-per-click ads are advertisements that you only pay for when a visitor clicks on them. These ads often lead directly to your website or a landing page. Because they can appear at the top of search results the same day you create them, PPC ads can drive traffic to your website right away.

By using a combination of SEO and PPC ads, you can significantly increase traffic to your practice’s website in a reduced timeframe and get better results for your practice.

Call Tracking

Being able to record incoming calls and track where prospective clients initially find your contact information can give you valuable information about your marketing efforts. Examples include tracking how many phone calls convert into new clients or your monthly call volume over time.

Call tracking can also be used to gain insight into the performance of your staff and discover areas of improvement where you can help them become even more effective.

Patient Education

Tech-savvy practices understand a clients’ desire to use the internet as a source of healthcare information and meet that desire by including authoritative patient education on their website. This turns your website into a go-to resource for reliable healthcare information. But online patient education also:

Makes Your Website More Engaging

When a client finds information to their questions, they’re more likely to schedule an appointment with your practice. Clients may also share your educational content with family or friends. Once they decide it’s time to see make an appointment, your contact information will be close by.

Can Improve Google Search Rankings

Online patient education generates more content for your website, which generates traction in search engine results for your website. With a greater supply of curated content, search engines are more likely to direct patients who are searching for healthcare information to your practice’s website.

Better Health Outcomes

Easy access to patient education results in increased confidence in your recommended treatments, improved self-care, reduced anxiety, better health outcomes, adherence to treatment, and reduced hospitalizations

Online Reputation Management

Online reviews are the new word of mouth recommendations. 85% of consumers trust online reviews as much as a personal recommendation. This makes your online reputation vital to the success of your practice.

Clients will always be able to leave reviews of your practice on existing review channels, but online reputation solutions make leaving reviews easier by giving clients the option of leaving reviews directly from your website or by allowing you to use automated tools that remind patients to leave a review.

Online reputation management solutions also often allow you to protect your practice against fraudulent or malicious reviews before they can cause damage to your reputation.

Business And Healthcare Listings

Your practice website is your online “home base,” but many patients will first come into contact with you outside of your website. Search engines, social media networks, mobile applications, and healthcare directories are where up to 58% of prospective new patients will find your practice.

Listings management services increase the effectiveness of these channels by allowing you to manage all of the information about your practice from one central source. By having a centralized source of information, you prevent inaccuracies and duplicate information from frustrating patients and causing penalties in search engine rankings.

Updating contact information and hours of operation across all your channels can often be completed in seconds.

Social Media Management

Social media networks like Facebook represent a vast referral network of clients for your practice. Establishing a social media presence for your practice allows you to reach new clients and stay connected with existing clients.

You can build a large network of potential referrals by sharing updates about your practice, distributing helpful content, notifying clients of holiday updates, and more.

Many prospective patients use their social media accounts to search for a local practice or ask their friends and family for a recommendation.

Secure Websites

Google has been making changes to help its users understand the need for a secure internet. They now label all websites that don’t use HTTPS (the protocol that secure websites run on) as “not secure” in the Chrome web browser. Other browsers are implementing similar features.

Google has sent a clear message that they expect website owners to have secure websites by default.

Websites that don’t have security enabled will likely experience a penalty in search engine rankings. Considering that an estimated 70% of page-one Google rankings are secure websites, any practice that is not using HTTPS should ask their web hosting provider to enable it or switch to a hosting provider that has HTTPS enabled by default.

Secure Forms and Emails

It’s necessary to keep all online communication safe and secure within HIPAA guidelines. Secure emails and HTTPS-secured website forms protect your patients’ private health information, keep your practice HIPAA compliant, and reduce the risk of a potential data breach.

Look for a communications platform that keeps all emails, documents, and forms protected, even if the recipient doesn’t have a secure email address.

Key Takeaways

Clients expect websites to use modern, clean designs that function seamlessly on all devices.

Over half of all internet traffic comes from mobile devices, so be sure your website is mobile-friendly.

Clients and Google expect websites to be secure so personal information stays safe.

Quality content and on-page search engine optimization can improve your search engine rankings over time.

Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising can bring your practice to the top of search results right away and when paired with organic SEO can significantly increase traffic to your website.

It’s a bit of a trick question. The best time to reach new patients is the time that they choose for themselves. To be visible when they make that choice, you’ll need to rank high in the search results that they’ll find.

Google pay-per-click ads are an effective way to reach new patients. When they search for a practice in their area, you can reach them when they are most receptive to your services.

Convirza found that 76% of local searches result in a phone call when a practice displays its ad in local search results.

What Are Pay-Per-Click Ads?

Pay-per-click (PPC) ads are short advertisements that display in local search results. When a user types a keyword related to your practice (e.g. “doctors near me”), your ad will be displayed to them. You pay a variable fee for the ad only when someone clicks on it (and remember, 76% of local search results in a phone call).

The basic process of creating a PPC ad is to open an account with Google AdSense, write your ad, select keywords and demographics, and set your budget. A digital marketing professional can guide you through the process in more detail.

Extra Benefits

Geographic Targeting – You can set geographic limits on your ads. This way they will only display to people within a certain distance from your practice. This can save you money because ads will only display to the people most likely to respond.

Stand Out In A Crowded Market – Pay-per-click ads, a professional website, and high-quality content help you stand out.

More Effective Over Time – The Google PPC platform has a suite of analytic tools that can be as powerful or simple as you like. By analyzing the response to your ads, you can fine-tune your efforts and make them more powerful over time.

Well-Established Advertising Platform

Companies trust Google enough to spend about $36US billion per year on their services. It is a platform you can trust to promote your practice.

Pay-per-click advertising may be what you are looking for to reach new patients when they are most receptive and help your practice thrive.

It should come as no surprise that Internet search engines, like Google and Yahoo! are quickly becoming the newest and most preferred means of finding local service-based providers. The Internet is saturated with local businesses, and doctors who once relied solely on phone book advertisements to generate new patient revenue are recognizing this fundamental shift from print to Web.

Just because your practice is located in a specific town, however, doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed a spot on the first page of Google for your location. Maybe five or six years ago, when the Internet wasn’t flooded with billions of websites, you could appear in the first few pages, but today you must take a series of actions in order to secure a prominent position in the search results and stay in front of your local competitors.

With the rapid growth and development of the Internet, there’s no denying that marketing has taken a significant turn. The following three steps can help move your practice forward into the age of digital marketing and online local search.

Build a website

If you build it, they will come. When it comes to launching a website for your practice, this couldn’t be truer. A website should function as the foundation of your entire practice marketing strategy and is the first essential step to earning top placement on major search engines. Websites developed with premium designs, keyword rich content, new patient forms, appointment requesting, easy navigation and patient education will be attractive for both the patients and the search engines’ ranking factors.

Optimize your Website for local search

You can have the most attractive, functional website, but if it’s not optimized for local search, you’ll have a difficult time ranking prominently in the search results. Search engines use complex algorithms when determining which websites rank at the top of the page for specific keywords, so requesting the assistance from a third party search expert may be a good option to ensure your website achieves a high natural search ranking. A local search engine optimization (SEO) strategy should include keyword identification and analysis; keyword rich website content; quality link building; Place Page set-up and verification; local directory submissions; and natural, patient reviews.

Keep your Website fresh

Keeping your website updated, timely and relevant is a key to online practice success. This is due in part because the search engines reward sites with high quality, updated content with a higher search ranking. To avoid a stagnant site and a decline in your search engine position, make an effort to update it regularly. This can include adding new office or staff photos; updating your practice information, services and forms; blogging; and upgrading your design with the assistance of your website provider.

As Internet technology continues to experience rapid growth and advancements, patients will continue to turn to Google and other major search engines to find information concerning their health. Search engines are the new phone books, and dismissing the power of the Web may result in a missed opportunity to market your practice and reach new patients like never before. Start by establishing your online presence with a professional, practice website. Optimize your site for local search, and then continue to refine and enhance your website for continuous, optimal performance.
